Jan Čulík, (prom. fil., PhDr.)

Senior Lecturer in Czech Studies. Has been on staff of Glasgow University since 1995. Studied Czech and English languages and literatures at Charles University in Prague, gaining a doctorate in Czech and English Phonetics.

In the 1980s, taught Czechoslovak Studies at the Universities of Glasgow and Lancaster. Worked as a producer for an animation company Persistent Vision Animation, which made films for Channel Four (in 1984, one of the productions, film Orpheus and Eurydice was selected for showing at the Cannes Film Festival; he wrote and co-produced a Channel Four documentary Orpheus Through the Ages [dealing with the Orpheus myth in music, literature and the arts, 1984], which received a TRIC award in for the best television film in the Music and Arts category in 1995).

In 1991, he brought out the first ever monograph on Czech independent literature in emigré publishind houses, (Knihy za ohradou, see below); in 2007 he published an extensive study of postcommunist Czech cinema 1989-2007(Jací jsme, see below). In 2007, he co-translated and edited the first English-language history of Czech literature for the past more than thirty years (Jiří Holý, Writers under Siege).

Jan Čulík has also worked as a reviewer and commentator on Czechoslovak affairs for the External Services of the BBC (1986-1989), as a reporter and commentator for the Czech Service of Radio Free Europe (1989-1995). He has contributed to a number of Czech and international media. Since 1996, he has been editing a Czech language political and cultural internet journal Britske listy, which is now read by some 150 000 readers per month.
