French uses two clusters, the Boyd Orr cluster and the language cluster in the Hetherington building, running DOS based software for language learning, on Macintoshes and PCs. Materials are used in first and second year on a fortnightly basis throughout the year.

In addition, some Honours options expect students to use linguistic databases to examine materials and to use concordance packages.

These are taken a step further in an M.Phil. in Modern French Language, where students are expected to become aware of some of the problems of authoring materials for the PC and the Macintosh (Hypercard). Hopefully, we will be progressing to Toolbook or Authorware to try to move toward multimedia and video using information technology. We are also likely to move to some continuous assessment using information technology.
