Computer-based Teaching Resources

Software

TLTP Archaeology Consortium. Fifteen CAL packages in a wide variety of subject areas. These resources are maintained and distributed by CTICH. Most are available only to UK Universities and Colleges. Demonstration disks are available. Includes links to related subject areas teaching packages.

OxCal 14C Windows calibration package produced by the Oxford Archaeology Research Laboratory. This is highly recommended for research. It is also useful for teaching, but the interface is not wholly intuitive, and does require some time for students to learn.

WinBASP - The Bonn Archaeological Statistics Package, with a wealth of tools including a Harris Martix constructor.

Electronic Data

is becoming increasingly available, particularly site excavation data. See:

Archaeology Data Service, The new British archiving service, part of the Arts & Humanities Data Service. It has a service wide responsibility for GIS and CAD data. It holds important data collections such as the C14 database and CBA Reports, but is also concerned with standards of metadata (data about data), enabling searching across disparate databases. Includes links to the National Monuments Record of Scotland.

Archaeological Data Archive Project, the US equivalent, aminly concerned with excavation data..

Jeremy Huggett's Anglo-Saxon Resources The author's downloadable cemetery data, and a good collection of links.

CD-ROMs

There are many CD-ROMs on the market, but most are designed for school or popular use. Nevertheless, some of them can be used for the resources contained, though often the documentation is poor.

Perseus An interactive guide to Classical Greece including maps, plans and photographs of sites, large datasets of coins and sculpture, texts in ancient Greek with translations. A university level project. Now available as a Web site.

Viking World Commercial production by the York Jorvik Centre. Has a large image database, but lacks basic data on many of the artefacts.

Anglo-Saxons Produced by the British Museum for schools. Covers most aspects of Anglo-Saxon archaeology in simple form, but also has the RCAHME database of Anglo-Saxon sites.

Medieval Realms A British Library production for schools. Has many historical documents and images, with good search facilities.
