University of Oklahoma Exchange

In the Spring of 1999, the Universities of Glasgow and Oklahoma negotiated a student and staff exchange programme. Amongst the main beneficiaries of this agreement are Glasgow students who are enrolled in the M.Litt in American Studies, for they will be eligible to apply to spend one, fully-funded semester as Graduate Teaching Assistants in either the Department of English or the Department of History at the University of Oklahoma. While at Oklahoma these students will be able to teach American undergraduates, take graduate level courses, undertake research for their M.Litt. dissertations, and take full advantage of spending a semester at one of the major state universities in the United States. Glasgow students will also gain through another component of the scheme, whereby Oklahoma faculty will visit Glasgow each year to offer seminars and lectures.

The University of Oklahoma is based in Norman, not far from Oklahoma City, and is accessible from Dallas by bus and train. It is a large state university, with over 27,000 students, and is a recognised centre of excellence for the study of the American West and Native Peoples. A large and impressive university library is enhanced by the University Libraries Western History Collections.

The opportunity for postgraduate students to spend one, fully-funded semester at a major American university is unique in Great Britain. For those students who intend to pursue a Ph.D., this programme will improve their chances of admission and funding in programmes in either the United Kingdom or the United States.
